The first Thanksgiving Day meal is served to the homeless and hungry a couple of weeks later. As an expression of God’s love in Southwest Florida, we are growing to ensure that no one experiencing hunger, homelessness or addiction is alone or without a pathway for their journey from crisis to contributor. Together with our partners and participants, we cultivate communities where people are progressively seen, accepted, challenged, and supported.

The “Task Force for the Homeless” began gathering contributions of both food and clothing, establishing the mission’s food pantry. St. Matthew’s House began in 1987 when a bible study group followed a calling to bring food to a homeless population living in a nearby wooded area. We work to provide healing words, resources, and structure to all who come to us. The homeless, addicted, mentally ill, and people wounded by life’s circumstances need the opportunity to find healing. We are helpful by providing food, shelter, clothing, and care for the sick and by visiting those in jail.

In 1953, the buildings were completed, and the newly ordained Reverend John Easton became the mission’s first Vicar. In 1899, the original altar in the sanctuary was moved to Grace Cathedral. It was located in the Cathedral’s chapel until the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. To replace it, Mrs. Francis J. Caroland donated a new altar in memory of her father, George W. Pullman. The solid sandstone altar that was installed in the sanctuary was designed by architect, Willis Polk. The building was designed by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

Aside from her work life and helping her son navigate the school landscape, Adair said she continues to attend meetings actively with a home group. Adair said that structure "really helped create a good structural environment" for her son to help him heal from the trauma he has been through. "Being an addict, I didn't sleep very often," Adair explained, adding that mothers at the shelter have a set bedtime, as opposed to those without children.

The north end of the church housed a memorial chapel, and a massive marble monument was placed there in memory of William Davis Merry Howard by his widow and their son. The Howard monument stands today in its original position surrounded by the church that was rebuilt around it after the 1906 earthquake. The upgrading of the infrastructure continued, and in 2001 a campaign was started to restore the stained glass windows. Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963. The Research House was rebuilt with the most modern materials and design adaptations by Neutra and his son Dion in 1966. There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona.

Parishioners, under the leadership and tireless effort of Lance Bosschart and Phil Mitchell II, did much of the repair work themselves. The years of deferred maintenance had also taken its toll on the church buildings and grounds. The stained glass windows were discolored and, in many cases, in danger of separating from their lead frames. To address these needs, multiple fund raising and stewardship campaigns were initiated. These goals were met through a major effort on the part of the Vestry and the various organizations within the parish, and by gifts from generous parishioners.

For 35 years, St. Matthew’s House has been responding to community needs while continually introducing innovative programs and services to better serve the individuals and families who turn to us for help, hope and healing. We will continue working with our many wonderful partners and volunteers to keep our 10,000-square-foot warehouse stocked and ready to serve those needing assistance. The public also can help by donating funds and food staples or volunteering. St. Matthew’s House also is expanding services at the Food and Emergency Assistance Warehouse  by adding a Community Services Center to provide assistance with other issues that food pantry clients may be facing. Financial contributions for St. Matthew’s House come primarily from private donations, faith-based organizations, corporate contributions, and local and national grant support.

The Reverend Neptune Blood William Gallwey, who became rector in 1904, oversaw the construction through to its completion and was the major force in raising funds to support the endeavor. He was also instrumental in influencing the architect to design a church modeled after churches in Ireland where he was born. High pressure systems that persist for a long time tend to correspond with heat waves and increased fire risk, he said. And climate change has contributed to a trend of rising heights, potentially magnifying these events.
